Mini-rant of the Day: Plowing through the 3D Sonic revisionism…

April 25, 2011

Yep, it's going to be another one of those rants. But I'll make it short...

You know, when you actually think about it, the modern Sonic design has been around since the before the release of the Dreamcast way back in 1998. So the old chubby Sonic has only been around for roughly 7 years, while for many more years, we’ve been accustomed to this Sonic for the better part of a solid 13 years, so it strikes me as odd that, because 1998-2002 has been historically known as “Sega’s Greatest Era”, Sonic’s fall from grace has now been tied to his design change.

But that’s for another time, because I wanted to clear up one major myth about 3D Sonic.

  • All 3D Sonic games have always been bad: Historically  the facts paint a very different picture than what the Sonic Cycle describes.

If we were to look closely, you would see that there was indeed a dip in quality in only two very specific time periods, with 2005 and 2006 being the most notable of the bunch, hence why Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06 are the black sheep of the 3D Sonic family. And a bizarre dip in 2008, when Sonic Unleashed was released. Sonic and The Secret Rings was at one point, “Sonic done right in 3D”, apparentely anyone who makes this assumption never actually played a Dreamcast game in their lives.
