Sega announces Gamescom return, only for german officials to announce shutdown(!?)

April 17, 2011

Why...!?

Of all the rotten luck in the world as it appears that Sega had annouced that they would have a Gamescom presence in Germany once again, after been absent in the previous year:

The German website SegaStuff reports that Sega will again have a formal presence at this year’s Gamescom expo, scheduled for late August in Cologne, Germany. The website cites the head of marketing for Sega’s Geman division, who says Sega will again have its own booth at the show, as opposed to the bandwagoning among several other booths performed last year.

However, at least two portuguese news outlets have claimed that Gamescom 2011 will shut down due to “lack of funding”. This is pretty weird. I did a little Chaotix Detective Agency thing and I checked that there is no press release in the official website making any statements about it, their Facebook account makes no mention of this, and not a peep from their Twitter account. This must be a translation error…

Gamescom in Cologne will not shut down. Those news are about the “Games Convention Online” in Leipzig, which indeed is the predecessor of the German games fair.

After the exhibitition moved to Cologne, Leipzig still wanted to have their piece of cake and held their “Games Convention Online” which was all about browsergames, client based online games and so on. But it was such a big failure that it is not continued in 2011, but the gamescom in Cologne will.

Confusing here in Germany, yeah.. 😉

Thanks, man. I knew there was something seriously wrong about that piece of news.

    Thanks for clearing that up.
